Robertson County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

What are some of the symptoms of a sick house mouse?
Just like humans get sick, mice are of no exception. They could get sick from the same bacteria from which we do, as their small immune systems are not as effective defending against it. If the sick mouse in question is a pet, identifying the disease in time is crucial, because if the treatment delayed could result in your friend to die. If it is a sick wild, unwanted mouse, do not come in any form of contact and never try to remove it on your own. Call in a professional for help. Mouse by nature tend to hide their illness, so they do not become easy attack for predators, but we have compiled a list which will help you identify if your furry friend is suffering from a disease.

Sluggish activity patterns  Mouse, in general, are hyper-active creatures and are very playful in nature. If your pet seems drowsy or slow and you notice him not moving, as usual, this could be an indicator that something is not normal.

Diarrhea  This is common among older mice and is caused by stress, consuming high amounts of fresh food, food-poisoning, and even an upset stomach. It can be diagnosed from the sightings of moist off-color poops, instead of the usual dark ones.  If you suspect that your domestic mouse if suffering from the disease, make sure that you force it to drink loads of water through a dropper. If you leave your pet unaccompanied, it may not sip enough liquid and eventually die of dehydration. If the disease persists for more than a day, it is best to consult a vet.  In the wild, mice die due to diarrhea in less than 48 hours.

Skin allergies  Mice can have allergies due to changes in bedding, and an addition of any new item placed inside the cage recently. Cheap wood shaving bought from the store may not be treated right, or the news feed which you are trying may be of inferior – all of this can cause allergies. General rule before buying accessories is to never change more than one product inside the cage at a time because if any problem occurs, you can easily locate the source and remove it. If a mouse is suffering from any allergy, signs will include baldness, excessive scratching, rubbing against an item in the cage and discomfort.

Tilted head  A clear symptom that the mouse if suffering from an ear infection. If the case is severe, Euthanasia may be advised.

Wet Tail  This is not common, but it does occur in mice and means that the mouse has a urinary problem of some sort. It is caused by urine leakage and or problems using the toilet.  If you suspect wet-tail disease, immediately book an appointment with a vet as delaying treatment may be fatal.

Eye problems  A watering eye could mean that your mouse is tired. However, if you notice any swelling, crusting, or white lumps on or over the eye, it might be a sign of an infection. If the problem keeps happening or getting worse, get help from a veterinary.
